Cosmetic Acupuncture Facial Rejuvenation FAQ

How does it work?

Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture includes body points to stimulate metabolism, whole body rejuvenation, and healing from within.   This activates deep relaxation of the body and mind. Strategically placed facial points lift and tone the face, while stimulating collagen to fill in fine lines and soften skin.

What happens during each session?

During your first treatment, we will discuss your health history and treatment goals.  I will then place the points and allow you to rest comfortably one the treatment table.  Most people fall into a restorative sleep as I am placing the points.  After your rest period, the points are removed, and you will receive a gentle face and scalp massage to promote further circulation and relaxation.

What is the course of treatment?

The initial course of treatment is 12 sessions administered twice weekly followed by monthly or quarterly maintenance visits.  Most people report they have a radiant glow and feel better after the first session.  The effects become most noticeable and lasting around the seventh session.  Everyone responds differently depending on his or her constitution and lifestyle.  After the initial course of treatment, maintenance sessions prolong the results for 5-10 years.

Recommendations for at home care such as self-massage, exercise and a healthy diet are tailored to the individual.

Do I need a separate series of treatments for each area of concern?

No.  We will treat all your facial rejuvenation concerns comprehensively.

I have studied three different styles of Cosmetic Acupuncture and have formulated my own protocol, customized to the individual.  My treatment philosophy is to lift and tone all the facial and neck structures while promoting collagen and elastin to flourish in the tissues.  I also “spot” treat the specific areas of concern as this varies with everyone.

Does it really work?

A 1996 report in the International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture reported that among 300 cases treated with Facial Acupuncture, 90% had marked effects with one course of treatment.  Acupuncture has been treating and preventing illnesses for thousands of years.  The efficacy of acupuncture is due to its direct effect on balancing the body’s bioelectric system.

Why should I choose Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture over cosmetic surgery?

Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture is a holistic way to look and feel better without surgery. It costs far less than cosmetic procedures and is safe and effective. No extended recovery time is needed and it provides a natural way to refresh your appearance while enhancing your overall health and wellbeing.

Can I have Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture if I have had cosmetic surgery, Botox or injectable fillers?

Acupuncture helps to speed healing and stimulates your natural collagen production and cell metabolism.  We will work together to optimize your results and other procedures.

Botox: I recommend waiting 2 weeks after Botox before acupuncture on the face.

Cosmetic Fillers: The cosmetic-type injectable fillers take about 7-10 days to integrate into your skin’s collagen structure.  We would work around the injected area during that timeframe.

Cosmetic Surgery: If you are having a surgical procedure, I recommend non-cosmetic acupuncture treatments before and after your surgery to increase your body’s healing mechanisms.  Acupuncture before surgery will boost your immunity, and acupuncture post surgery will help speed your recovery and reduce swelling.

What can be achieved by treatment?

Used as early as the Sung Dynasty (960AD-1270AD), Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture may eliminate as many as 5-15 years from the face. The cumulative stress, tension and emotions held in the face and body are released, allowing your authentic glow to emerge.  More than just a cosmetic procedure, the rejuvenation process helps your whole body look and feel better.

  • Improve firmness of your neck & face
  • Eliminate facial puffiness
  • Reduce bags around the eyes
  • Eliminate fine lines and diminish the appearance of deeper wrinkles
  • Improve your metabolism
  • Increase collagen production and cell renewal
  • Balance hormones and reduce acne
  • Improve facial color and circulation
  • Minimize double chins
  • Reduce stress in the face
  • Bring out your natural glow
  • Slow the aging process from within
  • Better sleep and energy

Do I need to take time off work while undergoing treatment?

No downtime is required and many people come in on their lunch hour.  If you are doing facial rejuvenation for a special event, I recommend completing your sessions  2-4 weeks ahead of your event.  For individuals who are on blood thinners or bruise easily, Arnica gel/cream and pellets can help minimize bruising.  Reducing sugar, processed foods and alcohol before and during treatment will lower inflammation systemically and reduce any chances of bruising.

Post Treatment Care

After treatment, please keep yourself protected from wind, and extreme temperature changes.  You are encouraged to rest, drink plenty of water and eat moderately.

What is Light Therapy?

Light Emitting Diode (LED) phototherapy is the application of light energy to tissue to obtain therapeutic benefits.  The energy is used to improve cellular performance.

Phototherapy is known for its healing and anti-inflammatory properties and has a variety of applications across many medical fields.  Research has shown that phototherapy can: increase circulation, accelerate tissue repair, decrease wrinkles, decrease inflammation, improve skin tone and wrinkles, texture and clarity, ease muscle and joint pain, stiffness, spasm and arthritis and kill acne bacteria, and much more.

How Does Light Energy work?

Specific wavelengths of light energy, when properly absorbed, up-regulates compromised cells. The light (photons) energy is absorbed by photoacceptors in the mitochondria and used to create adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The ATP produced then stimulates various metabolic processes which can result in the repair and regeneration of cell and tissue components. In an article, “Therapeutic Light” – by Chukuku S. Enwemeka, PT, PhD, FACSM, he wrote “other reported mechanisms of light-induced beneficial effects include modulation of prostaglandin levels, alteration of somatosensory evoked potential and nerve conduction velocity, and hyperemia of treated tissues. The resultant clinical benefits include pain relief in conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis, tendonitis, ankle sprain, and temporomandibular joint dysfunction, shoulder and neck pain, arthritis, and post-herpetic neuralgia, as well as tissue repair in cases of diabetic ulcer, venous ulcer, mouth ulcer, fractures, tendon rupture, ligamentous, tear, torn cartilage, and nerve injury.”

What is Celluma?

Celluma is unique and quite unlike any other low-level light therapy device available today. Based on NASA research, Celluma delivers blue, red and near-infrared light energy simultaneously to safely treat a wide variety of conditions. Each wavelength is absorbedby different molecules that act as a signaling mechanism for different cellular processes. For example, some reduce inflammation and some kill bacteria, while others enhance localized circulation.

Easy Pho

pho finished

I was introduced to my first steamy bowl of Pho while I was in massage school in the winter of 1998.  I was intrigued by the mysterious subtle spices that I couldn’t quite place.  I began experimenting with any recipe I could find and came up with this express version.  Traditional Pho is an art form, simmered over 24 hours and and doesn’t contain sake like my recipe here.  I use the sake to enhance the sweetness of the star anise.  I have tried various pre-made Pho broths in the stores but I find they are too heavy with cloves, sugar and salt.  Pho is really all about the broth and is great alone without the toppings.  This dish is very nourishing and has become a staple in my home year round.

Pho For Two

Pho Spices
Star Anise, Cinnamon Twig and Fresh Ground Coriander Seeds are warming and dispersing medicinal herbs.

Pho Broth
6-inch piece fresh ginger
2 yellow or sweet onions
3 cinnamon sticks
1 clove
5 star anise
3 teaspoons coriander seeds
1-32 oz box of low-sodium chicken, vegetable or beef broth (or bone broth would be ideal)
2 T Sake or Rum
Sesame Oil

Pho Toppings:
4 Green Onions
Fish Sauce
Mung Bean Sprouts
Fresh Hot Pepper of your choice: Serrano, Jalapeno, Thai Chili.
2 limes
Mint, Cilantro and Basil
Rice noodles
Sriracha-I love the Thai True brand Its gluten and GMO free and nicely hot!
Optional-10 prawns with shell on, or any other meat or tofu of your choice.
Fresh ground black pepper

Peel and slice the onions.  Slice the ginger into thin strips.  Roast the onions and ginger: Drizzle sesame oil into an iron wok or heavy pan and roast the onions and ginger over medium heat until charred and remove.  You may also broil them with sesame oil in the oven. Toss any pieces that get burnt.

broil onion charred
Broiling or roasting onions and ginger brings out the sultry flavors that balance the sweet anise.

Roast the spices: Using a mortar and pestle, lightly crush your spices and place in your iron wok or heavy pan and dry roast over medium heat until aromatic. This will also make your home smell fragrant and welcoming.

Place the roasted ginger and onions back into your pan, with the roasted spices and add the broth and sake. Bring to a quick boil, and then simmer on low for 30-40 minutes while preparing your fresh herbs and noodles for serving.  Its a good idea to have extra broth in case you end up cooking it longer or it reduces down and you need more broth before serving.  The idea is to infuse the broth with the roasted herbs and barely reduce the liquid.  (If you were making a traditional 24 hour Pho, starting from the meat bones, then you would just keep adding water.)

simmer pho spices in broth
Spices simmering in broth. In this image I let my decoction boil down too fast and needed to add more broth. Its OK if this happens, just add more broth or water.

Boil the rice noodles. This only takes a few minutes; be careful not to overcook. If you do overcook and they are mush, its better to compost the noodles and start over.

Sauces with herbs
Fish Sauce, Tamari and Sriracha. Traditionally fish sauce is cooked in the broth.  Its fun to let your guests experience the broth alone and make their own adjustments.

Assemble your Pho toppings on a side plate.  You may either make one big platter of toppings to share or make individual plates.  Thinly slice the hot peppers and green onions. Wash and pat dry the basil, mint and cilantro, quarter the limes and arrange on side plates with the mung bean sprouts and green onions. Set out the fish sauce and Sriracha.  Offer generous amounts of fresh herbs.  The herbs are an important part of the dish, and not a simple garnish.

Strain the broth. Compost the used spices, ginger, onions and other scraps.

Return the strained broth to the stove and quickly blanch the prawns (or other meat) in the broth until done. Leaving the shells on the prawns while cooking imparts an earthy flavor to the broth. Remove the shells before serving.

Portion the noodles into the bowls and top with prawns or your other protein.

Pour the broth into the bowls and serve with the Pho toppings.

Frowning on the use of Botox (because I can)

What I mean is that since I haven’t had Botox, I can still furrow my brow and let the expressions out of my face. I don’t condemn or judge anyone for using Botox or having cosmetic surgery..I feel everyone should make the choices that are best for them. I’m merely suggesting that you read Siri Carpenter’s Los Angeles Times article and consider what your are giving up by shunting the emotional connection between your face and brain.

I have been treating patients with acupuncture for over 10 years. In my experience, most facial lines and creases are the result of our thoughts and expressions. As we proceed through time, these “character” lines get locked in our facial musculature which in turn etch their way into our skin. Acupuncture provides one of the most powerful tools to naturally release the negative emotions that contribute an aged face. This is my favorite part of acupuncture. Acupuncture won’t delete your feelings or take anything away from you. Emotions are part of the human condition. It simply opens the doors through your meridians so that the toxic build up of grief, sadness, anger and rage, may gently float out when you are ready.

What is Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture?

FR imageAs summer fades and we get closer to the holiday season, I have received several inquires this week about facial rejuvenation acupuncture. Below is an article I wrote for the Fall 2005 print edition of The Senior Guidebook.

What is Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture?

Used as early as the Sung Dynasty (960AD-1270AD), Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture is a non-surgical method of reducing the signs of the aging process and renewing the body from within. More than just a cosmetic procedure, the rejuvenation process helps the whole body look and feel better.   A gentle, soothing facial massage follows the treatment.

How does it work?

The body is comprised of a network of energy pathways called meridians. Qi (chee) is the life force that travels along these meridian pathways. Thin needles are gently inserted into specific areas of your face, ears, neck, hands, trunk, and legs along the meridians. Specific points are chosen to balance the movement of energy in the body according to your individual needs. This treatment improves the facial appearance while simultaneously treating the underlying factors contributing to the aging process.

What can be achieved by treatment?

Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture may eliminate as many as five to fifteen years from the face. The cumulative stress, tension and emotions held in the face and body are released.

What is the course of treatment?

The series consists of 10-12 treatments. The first 8 treatments are administered twice per week followed by a weekly frequency for the remainder of the course. The effects become most noticeable and lasting around the seventh session. Each individual responds differently depending on his or her constitution and lifestyle. After the initial course of treatment, maintenance sessions can prolong the results for 5-10 years. Recommendations for at home care such as facial massage, exercise, meditation and a healthy diet are tailored to the individual’s lifestyle.

Does it really work?

Acupuncture has been treating and preventing illnesses for thousands of years. The efficacy of acupuncture is due to its direct effect on balancing the body’s energy system. A 1996 report in the International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture reported that among 300 cases treated with Facial Acupuncture, 90% had marked effects with one course of treatment.

Why should I choose Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture over cosmetic surgery?

Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture is a holistic alternative to cosmetic surgery. It costs far less than cosmetic surgery and is safe, virtually painless, has no side effects or risk of disfigurement. No extended recovery time is necessary and there is no trauma, swelling or discoloration from the treatments. It is a natural way to refresh your appearance while enhancing your total health and well being.

Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture can help:

§Improve firmness of the neck and face

§Eliminate puffiness around the eyes

§Increase collagen production and cell renewal

§Improve hormonal balance

§Improve facial color and circulation

§Reduce stress signs in the face
